Save Our Deer: Supporting Science and Community Involvement Over Slaughter

Who is Save Our Deer?

The group Save Our Deer was started by a small group of local residents in 2009 who came together to oppose Vassar College’s initial killing of the deer we have become accustomed to seeing in our neighborhoods. We were soon joined by members of the Vassar College community, including students, professors, and staff, as well as numerous other residents from all over the Mid-Hudson Valley. We were also graciously supported by animal advocacy groups and opponents of the killings from across the world.

The inhumane baiting (with food) and shooting of our small local deer herd by Vassar College should not have happened and should not continue to happen. It initially proceeded due to a legal error, which allowed the waiver of a City of Poughkeepsie gun control ordinance to be issued. The second killing, which took place in the Town of Poughkeepsie, is understood to be in violation of Town ordinances, as well.
